The Girls Football Scholarship

New to the college for September 2010, an all Girls Football Scholarship has been introduced in partnership with the Welsh Premier League team The New Saints (TNS) FC.

The Girls Football Scholarship has been introduced after the success of the Boys Scholarship programme that’s been in existence since 2003, which has seen significantly improved player performance and match results.

This is an excellent course for girls who enjoy playing football; scholars have a timetable based around 50% classroom study and 50% football coaching.

Learning will be varied and practical with an emphasis on developing skills in teamwork, ICT and self-organisation. The main programme of study is the BTEC National Diploma at Level Three in Sport Development and coaching. Scholars also have the option to study for just one year in order to achieve a National Award in Sport. Further to this students of the programme have the opportunity to develop functional and tutorial skills and also to work towards a Community Sports Leaders Award.

The programme has player development at its centre and all girls will be well supported throughout the programme, both on the football field and in the classroom.

The scholars will be based at Walford and North Shropshire College’s Oswestry Campus for the theoretical part of their programme whilst training and coaching for the girls will place at the home of the New Saints at The Venue, Park Hall, Oswestry, using their excellent facilities at The Venue, making use of the full sized synthetic pitch, gym and fitness suite.

The timetable allows you to train with a fully qualified TNS Football Coach for half a day three times a week with one full day per week dedicated to competitive matches. The Coach will accompany learners to all matches acting as team manager. The girls will compete in the English National Colleges Ladies League on a Wednesday.

Head of School, Andy Holland comments:

'This is an ideal opportunity for girls to develop their football skills to a higher level alongside studying for a BTEC National Certificate in Sport.  This combined programme is unique and would allow the girls to train alongside the leading Welsh Premier League Football club whilst gaining a nationally recognised qualification that equates to the equivalent of two A Levels'.
